How Indigenous Knowledge and Art in Urban Space Can Stitch the Future Together

A conversation with artists and architects Joar Nango and Eystein Talleraas (Vougas Studio). The conversation is organised in collaboration between Malmö Konst, Public Art Agency Sweden and Moderna Museet Malmö.

This year, Forbidden Culture Week coincides with the presentation of the final report of the Truth Commission for the Sámi People, examining the relationship between the Swedish state and the Sámi people. At the same time, Joar Nango and Eystein Talleraas have been awarded a new public art commission for the Ferry Terminal in Malmö. Their work draws on Sámi ways of thinking and building traditions: reading the landscape, listening to the materials of the site, and inviting the people of Malmö to participate as co-creators. As the duo write, “the artwork does not become an object, but a seam – between past and future, between forest and harbour, between the hands that build and the city that receives.”

The Truth Commission

The Truth Commission for the Sámi People will present its work in the autumn of 2026. Eight art institutions and organisations are marking this occasion through exhibitions, concerts, symposiums and discussions: Accelerator, Amnesty Sápmi, Bildmuseet, Gaaltije Saemien Museume, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Moderna Museet Malmö, the Sámi Association in Stockholm and the Public Art Agency Sweden. Together, we highlight stories about colonialism, Sámi identity, the relationship to land and territory, language and belonging.
