Contemporary Art Days 2026 features six thematic discussion groups. This discussion topic focuses on embodied approaches. Even within the arts and cultural sector, dialogue often takes familiar forms: discussion, writing, presentations, and conversations around tables. These approaches can be valuable, but they also privilege particular ways of communicating, participating, and producing knowledge.
Across artistic practices such as performance, somatics, circus, improvisation, movement-based work, and other embodied forms of learning, alternative approaches to dialogue have emerged. These practices invite us to consider how knowledge, experience, emotion, and understanding can be shared through more than words alone.
This theme explores how embodied approaches might expand our capacity to listen, communicate, navigate difference, and engage with complexity. Through practical experimentation and reflection, participants will be invited to consider how dialogue can take place through movement, presence, sensation, and collective experience, as well as through speech.
- What possibilities and limitations do embodied approaches present in different organisational, cultural, and social contexts?
- How can embodied practices create space for disagreement, vulnerability, and trust while respecting different comfort levels and boundaries?
- What can embodied approaches offer that more conventional forms of dialogue cannot—and when might words still be necessary?
The discussion begins at Teater Aros/Sprakateatern on 14 October and continues at Rikssalen on 15 October, where participants will further develop the ideas and conversations initiated on the first day.
