Arne Jones created the sculpture Vertical Composition in connection with the construction of the Department of Physiology at Lund University in 1952. After being affected by the weather, hit by a lorry and partially destroyed by a copper thief, the work was re-created in 2023.
One of the most important Swedish sculptors of the 1950s to 1970s, Arne Jones collaborated with the architect of the building, Klas Anshelm, and was tasked with creating a sculpture that conveyed “confidence and an unbridled sense of freedom”. It was a motto of its time – the Second World War was over and people looked to a better, future world. After being damaged by a storm in 2011 the sculpture was reconstructed in 2023. The replica was produced by Viggo Wichmann and Marc Rizell in stainless steel, in accordance with sketches by Arne Jones in which he mentioned stainless steel as an alternative to the original copper plate. The new sculpture stands outside the Forum Medicum university building in Lund and was inaugurated on 1 June 2023. The artwork is owned and maintained by Akademiska Hus.
