Anna Sjons Nilsson starts out from the rich folk art-tradition found in Dalarna/ Dalecarlia, in mid Sweden. She is fond of making paraphrases of Dala paintings or well-known art-historical motifs. När Meret Oppenheim börjar knyppla (When Meret Oppenheim Begins to Make Lace) was acquired for the Corona Collection, an initiative to support the Swedish art scene during the COVID-19 pandemic.
By recycling various objects and materials, Anna Sjons Nilsson creates assemblages or figures in which humour and seriousness coexist. She uses textiles in a way that “one is not supposed to” in works moving between traditional craft and contemporary art. In the film above, we encounter Anna Sjons Nilsson in her studio, where she talks about her work, which she describes as a conversation between herself and the work she creates.
