Alexander Gustaf Thompson’s artwork Glimmer (Mica) presents an impression from the inside of an age-old crust of the earth by the mineral mica. The work was acquired for the Corona Collection, an initiative to support the Swedish art scene during the COVID-19 pandemic.

By directing light through a thin leaf of mica onto photosensitive paper in a darkroom, Alexander Gustaf Thompson has created camera-less photographs. The artist discovered a deposit of mica, which is reminiscent of photographic negatives (think transparent shards), in a mountain in southern Gothenburg. The Department of Earth Sciences at Gothenburg University helped him determine its age at 1029 million years. He has created images that are photographic impressions from the inside of the age-old crust of the earth.

Alexander Gustaf Thompson is an artist and photographer. He lives and works in Gothenburg and holds a BFA in artistic photography from HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design at Gothenburg University.
