SYM

The artists Dit-Cilinn Sundqvist and David Ohlsson are presently working to realise their sketch proposal with the working title SYM for the new headquarters of the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, which is centrally located in Karlskrona and will be part of a larger entirety when the historic city is expanded.

The artists take as their starting point the curatorial vision and the location’s proximity to the sea, where they create a work that depicts a transformed being of light. The creature emerges from the sea and can be both a lantern and a vehicle. A light to navigate by, the heart of the building and the operations, placed just outside the entrance of the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning where the authority welcomes all those entering and leaving. Inspired by deep-sea organisms, the work reflects a vision where the biosphere and technosphere are intertwined. The artistic design invites reflection on the great cycles of life and leaves the viewer with a sense of courage and hope. The sculpture is made of bronze, polycarbonate sheets that are surface-treated like sea glass and will be illuminated during the dark hours of the day. The Swedish Board of Housing, Building and Planning will move into its new premises in May 2025.

About the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning and architecture

The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning is the national authority for urban planning, construction and housing. The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning is moving to new premises at Skeppsbron in central Karlskrona. This is part of a larger entirety when the historic city is expanded and a dignified entrance is created to the World Heritage and naval city of Karlskrona.

The architectural office sandellsandberg has designed a signature building with façades in charred wood, where the black colour and the red protruding undersides bring to mind the traditional black-tarred clinker-built “blekingeeka” with its red elements on the bottom, floor and red sails.
