During a sports holiday afternoon, artist Sarai Alvarez Riveros invites you to join in creating the artwork Den sociala väven in the exhibition Make it Grow – Textile expressions as public art, shown at the Public Art Agency Sweden.
Den sociala väven is an art project in which you embroider with colourful yarn threads and together everyone who is involved contributes to the emergence of the artwork through an interaction between textiles, crafts and community.
Den sociala väven is an art project that is ongoing for several years and takes place in various public places. The work consists of a wooden stand with jute fabric and embroidery thread where different people leave their own traces in the fabric. The work carries both autobiographical and historical references. The material tells the story of the jute fabric that was used during the artist’s childhood in Chile to pack goods and protect food from the sun. At the age of eight, a piece of jute fabric became Sarai Alvarez Riveros’s first embroidery canvas.
By jointly creating social spaces where we meet and create together, the artist wants to awaken a sense of belonging in public places. We make the spaces and the art together.
