Advanced education: Philanthropic support for artists

How can artists work with donations and other private forms of support as supplementary funding?

During 2024–2025, the Public Art Agency is carrying out a tailored education in collaboration with Brakeley Nordic to support art actors to work with philanthropic support in a more structured way, as an alternative or supplementary funding.

By comparison with to our Nordic neighbouring countries, the use of philanthropic support is quite limited in the Swedish cultural sector. However, there is an increasing interest from both cultural actors and from philanthropic interested parties. The education is specifically aimed at artists who want to develop their work with supplementary funding.

By art actors, we mainly refer to art organisations that are run under public auspices (e.g. municipal art galleries) or are driven by artists or curators.

Education structure

The course is divided into three occasions. It is of great importance that the participants are able to participate throughout the course.

In Module A (full day) we start off with an introduction to philanthropy and fundraising. We take a closer look at the conditions of the cultural sector and review important success factors. Module A is specifically aimed at artists. In Modules B and C, the participants have the opportunity for joint learning with actors active in other cultural fields.

In Module B (half day) we go through and look at a way of working with philanthropic donations called the seven steps. In Module C (half day) you will get more robust support with philanthropic work for your own business.

After Module C, the participants are offered some ongoing coaching by a Brakeley consultant throughout the project period (until May 2025).
