On Monday, we received the tragic news that Huang Yong Ping had passed away.
Huang Yong Ping was an artist who wove together ideas from different cultures and reflected society in a globalised world. With his subtle intuition and artistic sensibility he created artworks that left few untouched, Lotta Mossum, curator at the Public Art Agency Sweden, says.
– Huang Yong Ping was working with Public Art Agency Sweden on the public art intervention Rainbow Snake at the new Haga station in Gothenburg. The work comprises a 318 metre-long snake skeleton whose curved shape meanders through the entire Haga station traversing the layers of the earth, above and below ground, in the park, at the entrances, through the arrival and departure lounges and the platforms.
Rainbow Snake is intended to link Haga station’s underground platforms with the cityscape above. Certain parts of the gigantic body can be seen from outside, through the park, while most of it is located underground, suspended over the platforms of the station.
– We are currently unsure what will now happen with the project, however, it our and the Swedish Transport Administration’s desire to realise the work. Out thoughts go to Huang Yong Ping’s family and closest friends, says Lotta Mossum, curator, Public Art Agency Sweden.
– Huang Yong Ping’s death is an enormous loss. We will miss a person whose humble, humorous manner and perspicacity we greatly appreciated, Lotta Mossum continues.
