En figur håller upp en sol

Major art initiative when Varberg gets a new station area

In Varberg, three large public artworks are currently emerging in connection with the construction of the new station area. It is the Public Art Agency that, in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Agency, Jernhusen and Varberg municipality, allows art to take up place in the public space and meet people in their everyday lives – on the platform while waiting for the morning train and in the square on the way home past the new station building.

In the artist Joakim Ojanen’s work Horisonten – Att ta emot en sol (The Horizon – To Receive a Sun), a symphony of different colours appears on the square Södra Stationstorget outside the newly built train station in Varberg. A figure holding a highly polished bronze globe over his head stands in the centre. Symbolising the sun, the globe is tenderly received by the figure who lowers it to the earth. Four globular objects with a reflective surface surround the figure, as if they were previous sunsets the figure had taken down, and different phases of sunset have landed in the square.

Joakim Ojanen’s work is in dialogue with the artist Juri Markkula’s work Amarcord on the train station platform, as the horizon is the central theme of both artworks. The light blue and pink patina of the figure that stretches up to the sky to catch the sun can also be found in Juri Markkula’s work. With a sound-absorbing function, running over 300 metres along the platform as a horizon line, it creates a mental image of the colour and light changes of the Western Sea. Amarcord was the first artwork to be completed in the area. Currently Juri Markkula is also working on sketches for a work in the new station building, which will thus be linked to the platform.

Castings, carpentry, material samples and construction of the works are now in full swing in and around the Varberg station area. During the Swedish Transport Administration’s Open Workplace on 2 June, the public is invited to get an on-site picture of what the finished station environment will look like.

The initiative on public art in Varberg is conducted in close cooperation between the Public Art Agency, Jernhusen, the Swedish Transport Administration and Varberg municipality with the Swedish Transport Administration as the client, and is part of the Swedish Transport Administration’s focus on art in connection with infrastructure projects.
