Public Art Agency Sweden’s mission is for art to be accessible and innovative where we live and work. We create and manage the cultural heritage of the future through producing public art and acquiring art for the state’s art collection. Through our activities, hundreds of thousands of people can encounter the various expressions of art every day.
The Agency was founded in 1937 with the main objective that art would ”become everyone’s property”. Since then, we have worked to make art accessible to everyone. Already in 1937, the agency was also tasked with creating increased job opportunities and more favorable working conditions for Swedish artists.
Today, the mission is the same. We support the Swedish art life by commissioning artists to design public spaces throughout the country, as well as by acquiring art by living Swedish artists. By commissioning artists, we contribute to the shaping of society’s development through creativity, diversity and artistic quality. Through our activities, hundreds of thousands of people can encounter the various expressions of art every day in places where they live and work. In this way, we create the cultural heritage of tomorrow. Our collection consists of approximately 100,000 works that have left their mark on public spaces in Sweden since 1937, an important part of our shared cultural heritage.
We work throughout the country and offer, among other things, program activities and artist talks, creating a space for new encounters with art. We also invite you to our home on Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, to meet art and artists. Here, we offer an opportunity for the public to participate in conversations and to ask artists and other art professionals questions about art.
