On Meta Isæus-Berlin

Meta Isæus-Berlin was born in 1963 in Stockholm where she lives and works. She received her academic training at the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm. Since the 1990s Isæus-Berlin has been an influential artist, working with painting and installation art. Blending symbolism with the apparently realistic, her art is characterised by meticulous attention to material. Often complex, her installations challenge the conditions of the space. She has exhibited frequently in Sweden and internationally, including at the biennials of Istanbul and Venice (1997) and Melbourne (1999). Parallel with the commission of the Lund District Court, Isæus-Berlin produced an acclaimed and much discussed sketch proposal for Uppsala Cathedral, which was not installed. Rening (Purification) is Isæus-Berlin’s first permanent public artwork.
